Chimps and Pacman - evidence for evolution

Check out this video of a chimpanzee playing Pacman. OK he's not very good at it, but how many other animals would even understand they're moving something on the screen? Just look at his face at the end of the clip, so human. What is the chance that we would have other animals that are just so human on the Earth? Evolution can explain it and predicts species would be very similar to other species....

Why evolution must be taught in school

The Soviet Union is often used as an example of an "evolutionist regime". It is however clear that those making the claim have never done any research or know even the basics of the development of biology within the USSR. Under Stalin, similar to the Bush regime today science was prodded and pulled around to suit an ideology; 'in one country' for Stalin and the 'new American century' for Bush. And yes this is to an extent happening in the USA today, especially when it comes to global warming or stem cell research....

Hubble breaks down

This is why we need the Shuttle back in action ASAP, from CBC: Ed Campion, a NASA spokesman at the Goddard Space Flight Center outside Washington, D.C., told the Associated Press Saturday that he was hopeful the problem on the space-based telescope could be fixed from the ground. NASA experts suspect a faulty transistor or perhaps a cosmic event has wiped out part of the camera's memory. The transistor can probably be replaced by a back-up unit, while the camera's memory can be reloaded....

Pluto update

Just got an updated image for my previous post on Pluto's newly named satellites, this one shows which moon is which. This image was taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. Yup that's the sort of resolution it can get of Pluto with it being so small and far away. Still a few years to go before New Horizons gets us some close up images.

Pluto satellites named

To be formally announced tomorrow so I hear. Nyx and Hydra join Pluto and Charon. Interesting choice of names, Pluto being named after the god of the Underworld. Nyx is the goddess of night (the Sun is very faint all the way over there) so that's a good one. Hydra was the offspring of Styx and Styx was the river that Charon ferried across dead souls to the Underworld. With a bit of Pluto talk probably coming up in the next few days the issue of its planetary status will no doubt crop up....

Scientists urge evolution lessons

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/5098608.stm BBC News: The world's top scientists have joined forces to call for "evidence-based" teaching of evolution in schools. A statement signed by 67 national science academies says evidence on the origins of life is being "concealed, denied, or confused" in some classes. It lists key facts on evolution that "scientific evidence has never contradicted". These include the formation of Earth 4.5 billion years ago, and the onset of life at least 2....

A safe place? Let's try Earth

"It's a genius' conundrum." Recent article on the Arizona Republic: But Hawking also said survival of the human species depends on finding somewhere else in the universe to colonize. This is where the message became contradictory. The need to leave the planet was based on his rather dispirited view that "life on Earth is at the ever-increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster, such as sudden global warming, nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus or other dangers we have not yet thought of....

Let's get Discovery up there

The media are over-hyping the whole shuttle safety thing again. Let's keep things in perspective. The International Space Station is years behind schedule, modules that other countries have spent billions on are just sat waiting to be taken up. The Hubble Space Telescope is in dire need of maintenance, and that's just for starters. The shuttle has to launch and has to get its list of jobs done NOW. Before the US regime makes more of a mess of the NASA budget - if you want to go to the Moon Mr Bush you need to come up with some hard cash and stop cutting other programs which leave international partners in the lurch, like Russia who have been forced into handling the ISS single handedly, which made a mess of their budget having to pay for all the extra launches....

11 years of Astronomy Picture of the Day

I'll save you some time; links to this great resource: web and a feed for it, is it my favourite feed? Yes, it is. The first APOD appeared eleven years ago today, on 1995 June 16. Although garnering only 14 page views on that day, we are proud to estimate that APOD has now served over 400 million space-related images over the last eleven years. That early beginning, along with a nearly unchanging format, has allowed APOD to be a consistent and familiar site on a web frequently filled with change....
