Halo 2 for Windows Vista fact check

I'm finding more and more nonsense about this release, this stuff from the Bungie.net forums.

Check this guy out:

Unless you get a Gold Windows Live account, you're basically playing a demo of Halo 2. Microsoft wants you to pay for stuff that is free in virtually every other PC FPS.

Wrong, there's just so much wrong with this statement. Firstly, what on Earth is a Gold Windows Live account? There's no such thing. OK let's throw the facts out:

1) You can play Halo 2 online for free, you get a typical PC-style server browser.
2) Those who have an Xbox Live Gold account, get matchmaking features like TrueSkill (or whatever its called) and can earn multiplayer achievements.
3) I wouldn't call being able to play the whole single player without an Xbox Live Gold account a demo, you don't even need a silver account.

If you buy Halo 2 Vista, you're supporting this blatant rip-off that Microsoft is trying to pull. If Windows Live becomes popular, in the future, a lot of games might be like Halo 2 Vista.

What's Windows Live got to do with Halo 2? Windows Live is a rehashed semi-rebranding of MSN. Games for Windows is unrelated, and is really just a logo program for games, like Certified for Windows logos etc.

A lot of games might be like Halo 2 Vista? Great, I want to earn achievements in PC games, and be able to voice chat with people on their Xboxes. I've got an Xbox Live Gold account, I won't say no to some extra features for PC games.

The only reason Halo 2 Vista is Vista exclusive is to promote Vista. There is absolutely no reason why Halo 2 couldn't be done on XP.

Sure Halo 2 could be done on Windows XP. But it wouldn't have all the Live features, which are only for Windows Vista. Microsoft don't need a little game to promote Windows Vista, which is selling twice as fast as any previous Windows release, and in only five weeks eclipsed the entire Macintosh platform. Microsoft made a business decision to only release on Windows Vista so they could use Halo 2 to show off some of their new technologies.

My point is that Microsoft wants you to pay for stuff when it's free in other games

Other PC games don't have the fancy Xbox matchmaking thing nor achievements, so you are wrong. Halo 2 has the standard PC multiplayer stuff for free.

Halo 2 for Windows Vista resolutions

I spotted the first review claiming Halo 2 on Windows Vista would only go up to 1680x1050 a few weeks back now. I've seen that number spread to a number of other reviews on much more popular websites which should know better.

Halo 2 on Windows Vista screen resolution

Halo 2 will go up to *at least* 1920x1200.

In memory of the Paris Commune

One hundred and thirty six years ago today, the first attempt to create a truly democratic society was strangled by capitalism.

The people of Paris took power into their own hands, establishing a participatory democracy in which the people of Paris themselves took part in government, from the bottom up.

The Paris Commune was ruthlessly crushed by the armies of capitalism, at least fifty thousand people in Paris were slaughtered, one hundred and forty seven Communards were executed along a wall now known as the Wall of the Communards.

Monument to the Communards murdered by the forces of capitalism

The Commune brought about the prototype for socialist organisation of government. Four key rules, 1) Free and democratic elections, and more importantly the right to recall your representative at any time. 2) No official to receive more than the average wage of a worker he represents. 3) No standing army, but an armed people. 4) The tasks of the state to be carried out by the workers themselves.

It also taught us that capitalism will show no restraint when their dictatorship is at risk, they destroyed a city when it happened to Paris, and they destroyed a country when the people of Russia took power, twenty one foreign imperialists armies invaded Russia, killing millions in white terror. The same in Hungary, in Germany and where ever else their dictatorship is threatened. Capitalism will never willingly allow the people to have power, something that the pacifists on the left need to learn.

Close encounter between Saturn and the Moon

Yesterday evening I managed to snap Saturn and the Moon at an extremely close encounter, I would of got out earlier and taken some photos of them even closer, but I was busy trying to retrofit my Canon T-ring, with the thread from my Pentax T-ring, which was successful so I have pretty decent focus now when using my 350D at prime focus on my 6 inch TAL 2M reflector, it did delay me by about half an hour though.

Saturn and the Moon

There's a high resolution version on the gallery. I've still got a few more images of this too, so I may publish them at a later date, I'm thinking of merging two images together to get a better exposure on the Moon.

Close encounter between Venus and the Moon

On Saturday, Venus and the Moon made a pretty close approach, we didn't get it as close in Europe as people did in the Americans, but it was a pretty close encounter nevertheless.

Venus and the Moon

I've got the high resolution (3456x2304) versions of these in the gallery.

Dell entering the Tablet PC market

Dell has just announced that they will be entering the Tablet PC market later this year.

Visually it's a nice looking machine, and it does somewhat go against the recent trend for heavier convertible Tablets, like the Protégé M400 (bigger and heavier than the M200).

So what do I want from this? Screen resolution wider than 1024 pixels when in portrait mode, so something like 1400x1050 like the M200. Although it looks like the shot in the video had perhaps 900 pixels wide, so if I'm right can we have an option for higher resolution screen please?

Lighter weight than the Protégé M200, or at least no heavier.

4 hour or greater battery life (with Wi-Fi turned on).

Any moderately OK specs will do me, I'd like a decent graphics accelerator but that's not essential.

Release it in the UK and you'll probably have my money.

Labour MPs who nominated Brown

For the sake of the CLPs, here are all the Labour MPs that nominated Gordon Brown.

I have to disagree with the People's Commissar who says the following:

The sheer volume of MPs nominating Gordon speaks volumes about the unity in the PLP and it is time for all Labour members to get behind him and his new administration.

The sheer volume of MPs nominating Gordon speaks volumes about the amount of Tory deadwood in the PLP and the lack of internal democracy and it is time for all Labour memebers to throw every MP who did not represent them out into the rubbish.

It's time for the CLPs to decide if they want to start deselecting MPs and passing resolutions committing them to only support candidates who will follow the policies they outline.

Halo 3 release date and countdown sidebar gadget

Microsoft have announced that Halo 3 will start shipping on Tuesday the 25th of September, the European release will be Wesnesday the 26th of September. So I've released a Vista sidebar gadget for Halo 3.

Halo 3 countdown sidebar gadget

It's pretty simple, it countdowns to the release date. There's two versions for each region North America and Europe (126KB), download from Microsoft's gadget gallery North America and Europe.

More MPs required to nominate McDonnell

John McDonnell has 27 nominations so far, and requires another 18. I see over at People's Commissar of Enlightenment there's a list of 18 potential MPs who have yet to nominate.

Hopefully we'll reach the 45 by Thursday.

McDonnell and Brown debate

Here's a recording of a debate carried out on Sunday between Labour Party leadership candidates Gordon Brown, John McDonnell and Michael Meacher organised by the Fabian Society.
