The minimum wage is £5.52 an hour

It's October and the minimum wage has gone up to £5.52 an hour. Game, are so gracious to pay me 3p above minimum wage, fantastic stuff. I guess they have to save a bit of cash for a few years after buying out their only other competitor on the high street.

£5.52 isn't enough; the minimum wage should be at least...

£7.50 an hour

...For all workers, not just those over 22.

Although the minimum wage was an important achievement - something that I doubt any government in the future will try and take away, it is simply not enough given the conditions people are finding themselves in. House prices in the UK have doubled in the last 10 years, the minimum wage has not kept up with living increases.

Even £7.50 per h/r is not going to get you anywhere near getting on the property ladder but sure that would be a much more decent level than at the moment.

I think what we need to do is cement in a mechanism for the MW to keep rising in relation to the rest of the economy rather than let another government let it whither on the vine.

I think you're paid two weeks in arrears, so yeah.

I left my old job because i was only earning £3.50 an hour. Now i workat morrisons for a measly wage of £4.16. I'm part time and 17, yet i still think i should be earning £5.50 plus.

Although it would be nice to have a rate of £7.50 it's simply not a realistic figure from an employers point of view. Small company's up and down the Country would simply fold. £7.50/hr is equivelant to a £14k salary on my hours. I do agree tho that the increase to £5.52 has been a long time coming! We also need to sort out the employers that still arn't abiding by the current minimum wage.. thats an even worse problem!

Paul. The minimum wage was one of the good things Labour have done.
£7.00 an hour comes from a group of cleaners at Canery Wharf in London backed by their union for a 'Living Wage'. It took a while to win the rate with stoppages and a big campaign. No empoyer gives anything away, it has to be fought for.
So all you non unionists there is only one organisation that will fight with you and that is a trade union. SO ORGANISE. B.B.
