DVD Forum approves Toshiba's 51GB HD DVD disc

Another blow for BD crowd. The DVD Forum has approved Toshiba's triple-layed 51GB disc for production and inclusion in the HD DVD standard.

A singled-sided triple-layer HD DVD/DVD hybrid disc is also expected to be standardised by the end of the year. Most hybrid releases have thus far been doubled-sided, the extra storage capacity of the triple layer disc will allow more hybrid releases to be single-sided.

Blu-ray has just lost the storage advantage. All it's got left now is DRM, if you could possibly call that an "advantage".

Blu-ray also has the higher bitrate advantage. But that's only if studios encode their material properly.
