The American atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were major factors that led to the Japanese surrender, and the official end of World War II.
The nuclear bombs killed VERY VERY few people compared to the carpet bombing of the rest of Europe. And that was done by the allies. Not to mention the amount of people killed by the advancing armies.
Imagine what it would have taken to defeat japan in a land battle. The whole country would have been devestated.
